As a child, growing up, my favourite film was ‘The Secret Garden’ by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The garden in the story is an evolving character within itself, that affords the protagonist & supporting characters the means to overcome loss, grief and serious illness.
The Eleventh Oak is my secret garden. Our logo, designed by Amelia Leonards, is inspired by ancient Celtic beliefs that Oak trees have secret doorways that lead to other worlds. The premise behind The Eleventh Oak is that you are turning your back on daily life stressors and entering a secret world for a few days where you will find solitude and be surrounded by native wildlife.
Michael & I were blessed to find this 50-acre farm property in Yellingbo, Victoria in 2020; and it was not long before the farm called me to fulfill my dream of creating my own secret garden; one however that would be a shared space.
Hence the first plants went in to create a privacy screen, and work commenced on the design & construction of our bed & breakfast site. Being the highest & most beautiful spot on our property, the views are spectacular and are encapsulated in my design of the cabin. The challenge was to transform this cattle paddock into a vibrant native Australian garden, that was inviting for our local birds and wildlife, whilst being a secluded, tranquil space for guests.
Successfully opening in April 2025, having planted 500+ native trees & plants, The Eleventh Oak’s landscaping will continue to evolve and flourish, as we learn what plants work well in the soil and what needs more shade or less sun.
Our ambition is that guests who stay at The Eleventh Oak, will benefit from the love and attention to detail that has gone into this unique getaway experience, and leave feeling well rested & rejuvenated.
Most people have incredibly busy lives, are over committed and sometimes place their own health & wellbeing on the back burner.
